Are you a small business owner? If you are, you will likely face a large amount of competition from others; others who may be larger than you and others who may have more resources at hand than you do. Although it may seem as if you are at a disadvantage because your business is a small business, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are a number of different ways that you can make sure that your business is able to successfully compete with your competition, even your competition that may include large, national companies.

When it comes to competing with your larger competitors, it is important that you remember exactly what you are, a small business. This automatically makes you unique right away. Each year, a large number of small business owners end up closing their doors. While this may not sound promising to you, it should give you a little bit of hope. There are actually a large number of consumers who like doing business with small businesses, just like you. In fact, some prefer to do business with them. The less competition you have from other small businesses, the greater your chances are of staying profitable and in business are.

While you may not necessarily be able to manage the competition that you do and do not have, one thing that you can control is your business’s public perception. For instance, if you were to run a pet supply store or a clothing store, there are a number of other businesses where your customers could go to buy the same products at, like a large department store. To avert that from happening, you want to give your customers a reason to come to your store, as well as reason to keep on coming back. The first step is to make sure that your establishment is well-kept and always clean. You will wish to pickup your sales floor, if your business has one, each and every day, dust, mop the floors, and keep all of your entranceways cleans. To many consumers, nothing is more unappealing than a dirty business.

In addition to making sure that your establishment is well-kept and always clean, you need to examine the type of service that you and your employees provide your customers with. Most small businesses are known for their personal feel. When it comes to doing business with a small business, there are customers who want to feel like they are known by name, even if they aren’t actually, or feel like they can stop and talk with you and your employees about nothing in particular, like the weather, just because. This is what will essentially set your business apart and make it easier to compete with larger businesses. Unfortunately, many of today’s larger corporations have more of a focus on “don’t waste company time or money,” than they do the customers. Making sure that all of your customers receive the best service available, as well as thank you every time, is the best way to compete and win against your larger competitors.

The above mentioned ways are just a few of the many ways that you can make sure that your small business is running just as strong as the competition. Even if you run an online business, instead of storefront one, a personalized, friendly service is an important component of being successful. For additional methods that may help your business stay afloat, you may want to think about turning to your customers for suggestions. A simple suggestion box may provide you insight into your customers, as well as their wants and their needs.

Your business may be small, but your passion and dreams are huge. Making all of your effort pay off is a job for small business coaching.

The best type of small business coaching is to tap into some of the most successful business experts on the planet. So how are you going to do that?

You will find many companies, organisations and individuals out there that claim to be successful business coaches, but rightly so, you should be wary. There are also companies that have earned excellent reputations for the legitimate work they do, KeyBusinessCoach.com is one such business. Key business coaches are some of the most well recognized, influential and talented people in the business, and they have all the credentials to prove it.

So how does a small business acquire this level of talent? The great news is that it doesn’t involve you taking being away from your business for days – it is as easy as a virtual trip to Key Business Coach, where you can take your time, reading, listening to presentations and asking questions. Whenever and wherever you choose.

What can I learn from joining key Business Coach?

Business coaching is a vital step on the road to creating a lucrative and profitable small business. With the help of some of the world’s leading entrepreneurs, such as Peter Irvine and Tony Gattari, your small business can become a large profit maker.

* Learn the plans and strategies put into use by these experts in order to help you boost your business into the big leagues, creating and earning the profits and reputation you deserve. Many of the small business coaching staff have been small business owners themselves. They know what you are dealing with and they know how to help.

* Discover how to employ excellent communication techniques with employees and clients – this often overlooked skill could be the ‘do or die’ of a successful enterprise.

* Use the passion shared by both you and the business coaches to view the economic status of today’s market as temporary and learn what it takes to make it through.

Small business coaching is an invaluable resource to the small business owner. Sharing skills and knowledge with those who already are where you want to be, is an amazing partnership to success. With the proven ability to work with, promote and help businesses of all sizes succeed there can be no reason to overlook an opportunity such as this one. It may be exactly what it takes to turn your small business venture into your incredibly huge dream.

When you hear the term “internet marketing“, what do you think of?

For many, that term conjures thoughts of websites or spamming or search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. For others, it’s all about graphical design, writing fancy code or even affiliate programs. All of those answers correct, but the essence of internet marketing is much simpler.

At its core, internet marketing is about these things:

* Understanding the target market to which the product/service/cause you’re marketing will appeal
* Determining exactly how your target market interacts with the internet
* Positioning your content on the internet to attract the attention of your target market
* Collecting information about your target market (also known as “leads”) for follow-up and conversion into sales
* Design of offers or incentives to induce the desired actions from your leads

Since there is insufficient space in this article to give all of these topics adequate attention, let’s focus on just one specific topic with the realm of internet marketing: Email Marketing.

My best payoff has always come by focusing on permission-based email marketing. Permission-based email marketing refers to the practice of collecting information (including email addresses) from website visitors and communicating with them via e-mail with their direct consent. The “permission” aspect of permission-based email marketing is what separates legitimate email marketers from the spammers that everyone despises.

My love of email marketing is strong for one reason: It works very well. Email marketing has been much like a never-ending goldmine: It enables us to produce income on demand simply by sending a good offer to our list. When you have thousands of loyal subscribers – as we do – and you put a strong and compatible offer in front of them, income becomes nearly automatic.

However, the key to successful email marketing is the development of a legitimate trust relationship with your subscribers. If you opt to send your subscribers a request for purchases every single day, they will likely tire of your badgering and cease reading your emails altogether.

Alternatively, if you take the time to provide good content to your readers on a regular and frequent basis, you’ll discover that your readers take all of your emails far more seriously, and as a result your emails will be opened, read and acted upon with greater frequency. Essentially, email marketing is really an exercise in trust.

While there are many more aspects to internet marketing than just permission-based email marketing, email has definitely been the cornerstone on which our business is built.

How can you take advantage of the economic downturn to increase your business? There are 5 methods you can use to generate new business now.

1. Instead of selling your product or service, consider a lease agreement. If you sell software, try a Saas model: Use a free trial period to hook new business.

2. Mop up the wreckage. Many companies have gone out of business in the past two years. Which of your prospects and customers moved to a competitor during the past two years?contact them now and see if they are happy or if they are looking due to increased pricing or having lost features or support.

3. Understand why your customers use you! By asking your customers why they really use you, you will discover your true value. You may be trying to sell based on quicker response time when most of your customers use you because you are reliable. Position your product or service on these new-found values.

4. Consider selling in a new geographic area. The use of the internet allows sales to come from any part of the globe. Learn how to market to a new sector or area. You may find that the need for your product or service is not being met in a particular area of the world or business sector.

5. Review what worked in the past. If your company is ten years old or older, you’ve weathered other downturns. Review techniques you have used in the past and apply them today.

The key to grabbing business today lies in understanding why you got business in the past. It is of utmost importance to look at your past sales techniques and see how they could be used today and to talk to your customers to see what they like. By using those two techniques to approach customers of other companies, you will be able to get their attention. Then offer them a free trial or a lease instead of sales situation.

Recently I’ve become a provider of gardening services. And though I’ve been doing it for a few months now, I was told very recently that I still can’t refer to myself as a gardener. I’ve been informed that a clear distinction exists between gardening services and landscaping services. Gardeners both maintain outdoor areas, while at the same time are experts in plants and their environments, knowing which plants will fare well in different environments. Landscapers, I was informed, only keep up with existing areas. All that aside, learning how to offer landscaping and gardening services was one of the best things I’ve done this year.

If a person spends enough time at it, gardening will show them almost all they’ll ever need to know in order to keep up with home repairs. Repairing broken sprinklers, building apparatuses for ponds and waterfalls, and setting up retaining walls, one gets to try their hand at plumbing, carpentry, and masonry. Even though I’m still a ways from calling myself an expert in the field of plants and their prime habitats, I’ve gained many of the skills essential for meeting the demands of an aging home. Those skills I’ll hone as much as I can in future months and years.

The other reason why building a collection of gardening services was so satisfying to me, was because it made me feel connected to that old-fashioned master/apprentice model of learning. Doing work for a friend of mine who owns his own gardening business, I was taught gardening firsthand by a man who’d been in the business for over thirty years. Being younger, I have very much enjoyed spending time with a person who is a master at his craft. There’s just something special and rare about that style of learning in our modern day and age. You don’t it much anymore. It’s something I think we’ve lost in this country. Maybe I’m being overly nostalgic. I don’t know.

On the more current, economic side, the demand for gardening services has seen a sharp decline, especially in the state of California, where I reside. During tough economic times, gardeners are seen more as a luxury than a necessity. Add to that the current water crisis in southern California, and you’ve got a very tricky situation for landscapers and gardeners. But the grass still grows as fast as ever, and people will hopefully soon start to miss their landscape professionals. I’ve seen quite a deterioration this year in the upkeep of outdoor landscapes. It seems as though a simple enough thing to maintain a yard, but surprisingly, even keeping up a green lawn can be a formidable task. It’s a shame, not only that gardening services are on the decline, but also that yards are losing their landscape lustre. As things begin to bounce back, I’m hopeful we’ll see a change.

Starting a business is something that has come across the minds of many people. Sometimes it happens because a person gets laid off or because there is no room for advancement in their current position.

Starting a business may seem like the only option in these cases. When you are starting a business be sure that you are starting a business that you can see yourself running for a long period of time. Here are some things to consider to help you get going with this project of starting a business.

How are you going to handle customer disputes?
I know what you’re thinking. I’ll never have a customer dispute. We will always deliver exactly what the customer asked for. That’s how things should happen. However, things do happen in business.

You need to decide upfront how you are going to handle these situations. Are you going to offer refunds? If so how does a customer go about getting a refund? These are things that seem silly to think about now, but you don’t want to have a lawsuit arise because you didn’t take the time to plan out your business policies.

How are you going to manage your subcontractors or employees?
This is another big area that gets people tripped up. Many people don’t think about outside help until they are too deep into their problem. Decide early on whether you want to have on site employees or if you want to contract your work out to other business owners. These things make a big difference as to what types of insurance you have to pay for and what benefits you have to provide.

When you first start a business the only thing you can think about is how much money you are going to make in said business. Be sure to think about all the things that could go wrong and prepare for them so that you don’t have that many surprises when you do start your business.
